In celebration of the launch of Nuart street art festival 2021, I’m taking a look back at some of my favourite artworks from previous years.

On the corner of Holburn Street and Willowbank Road, a huge hand-painted sign covers the gable end of the Country Ways shop side exterior wall. As with all Nuart installation sites, this was previously a dull concrete wall, white-washed and pebble-dashed.

Super Scurry by street artists Conzo Throb and Ciaran Glöbel was installed for Nuart, the annual street art festival in Aberdeen, 12-15 April 2018. Both artists are based in Glasgow. Ciaran Glöbel uses traditional hand-painting sign-making methods and tools for his commercial work as a sign-making artist. Conzo likes to get busy with walls in Glasgow and various other caricatures.

This one is around the corner from where I grew up and always makes me chuckle whenever I go back for a visit. I’m sure the artists must have overheard a local conversation that inspired this artwork.

“He’s awa’ wi’ yir chips” sums up the comical relationship between the giant seagulls of Aberdeen and the locals. People love eating chips outside and so do seagulls. There have been times when the seagulls have snatched food out of people’s hands or shoplifted bags of crisps from the local shop. 😀

I’m usually off to get a chip supper from the Ashvale when I see this. Plenty of time at the crossroads to get a good look at this beauty *seagull actual size, by the way. 😀
